Heri Junior School

School opened for pupils on 2 January as normal, but it wasn't a normal school day for the pupils of Heri Junior.

Thanks to the generosity of Thomas Cook, the pupils of Heri Junior started the year receiving breakfast and lunch both filling and nutritionally sound.

Large numbers of children attend school in the Nairobi slums, hungry because their parents cannot afford to feed them and stunted because their meals do not provide the nutrition they need to grow healthy and strong.

Forrester

The pupils of Forrester were in for as much of a surprise with breakfast and lunch provided every school day.

The members of the charity work hard to raise funds to support the programmes of the charity so achieving goals like this are deeply rewarding.

Sukuma Wiki

Sukuma Wiki is a member of the cabbage family, very close to Kale. It contains high levels of Iron and fibre, and is a popular vegetable among Kenyans.

Porridge and Rice has started to cultivate Sukuma Wiki both for eating as part of the Feeding programme and for sale to raise funds for schools.

In the long run, the charity hopes to be able to assist members of the community with growing Sukuma Wiki, especially for the purposes of generating income.

Sweet Potato

The sweet potato project continues to go from strength to strength.

The charity has now completely switched from cultivating white sweet potato to yellow sweet potato because the latter is much higher in Vitamin A.

Vitamin A deficiency is a major problem in Kenya among the poor. It is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children and increases the risk of disease and death from severe infections.

Children at Porridge and Rice pupils now receive their required Vitamin A thanks to the meals provided at school.

Petting Day

Petting Days have become a regular event on the Porridge and Rice calendar. These events have helped raise money for the work of the charity and create awareness of the its work in Kenya.

At the last Petting Day, hedgehog cupcakes made by Asea Mahmood were on sale.

NCS

A team of Porridge and Rice volunteers attended an event for students who had attended NCS during their summer. The idea was to promote the work of the charity and engage young people as volunteers for the charity in the UK and Kenya.

The event was a big success with volunteers teaching students how to make a balloon dog, as an example of one of the activities in which they can engage to raise money for the charity in the UK.

Golf

Ned Durrans organised a golf day at the Surrey Golf Course to raise money for Porridge and Rice. The day included breakfast and lunch, plus a few fun challenges.

The day was a success despite winter not being the ideal season for playing golf for the eleven people that attended, bringing in over £840, and making it an event to repeat in summer. Let Ned know if you are interested.

Volunteer Handbook

The updated volunteer handbook is now available on-line to read or download. Please take a look if you are a supporter of the charity.

It contains lots of information information that should interest anyone following the work of the charity in Kenya, not just volunteers, copiously illustrated with photos of Porridge and Rice schools and programmes in Kenya.

Of course, for those wanting to volunteer or complete an internship or elective with Porridge and Rice, the handbook explains what the charity can offer. If it does not provide the information that you are looking for or inspires a question, please do not hesitate to email.
