October Trip

Three trustees, Emma, Jude, and Ken, travelled to Nairobi in October 2016 for Porridge and Rice. It was both busy and worthwhile with the trio completing tasks ranging from checking the health of pupils and progress on the sustainability project.

The three visitors treated the Kenyan leadership team to lunch at Spice Restaurant in Kawangware. all work so hard that it was good to be able to recognise their efforts with this simple gesture.

Grace and Beth of Lizpal school pose with some of the donations from the UK including pens, balls, and a laptop. The charity is grateful to their generous donors.

The Kenyan team presented Brigitte with a cake on her birthday, much to her surprise. She tried to keep it quiet but someone revealed her secret.

Kawangware market is where the charity buys food supplies for school meals. Beans are central to ensuring that pupils get the iron they need to stay strong and healthy.

Emma distributes Vitamin A tablets to pupils. Vitamin A deficiency is a major problem for the poor of sub-Saharan Africa causing permanent blindness in severe cases.

RAF Charity

The RAF Charity "Taking Football to Africa and Beyond Appeal" delivered football kits to all five Porridge and Rice schools, as well as some footballs to the delight of staff and pupils.

The charity collects football kits from teams in the UK who no longer need them, and ships them to poorer communities who cannot afford to buy their own.

Wine Tasting

Yet another successful wine tasting was held last month, raising the profile of Porridge and Rice and funds for the work of the charity in the slums of Nairobi.

Wine tasting has become an annual event, at which supporters can have a laugh and learn something about wine.

Uji

Sour Uji is an African porridge made from millet and sorghum wheat. It provides the pupils with energy and many vital nutrients such as Iron, Potassium, and Magnesium, all essential to the health of the growing child.

Chickens

The Porridge and Rice flock is growing steadily with the addition of more Kienyeji chicks. Kienyeji are an indigenous breed of chicken, well suited to the Kenyan climate and environment.
